Naby plays the 21-barred traditional West African balafon. In the photo above,
Kamal is playing the dundun, which provides the basic rhythm foundation. Kane
Mathis is playing the kora (a 21-stringed harp/lute, also a traditional West African
instrument). Behind Naby is his djembe drum, which he is also an acknowledged
master on.
Naby comes from a lineage of persons known as "griots" (pronounced gree'-oh)
in West Africa. Griots are the people who are chosen, from birth, to carry on
the cultural traditions of their village and tribe. Naby is a griot, as are his
brothers, his father, his grand fathers, and so on back through the history of
his people. Thus, in addition to being trained as a master musician, he also knows
the stories and histories of his people. Thus, Naby is a walking treasure of not
only talent, but knowledge as well.
