The African group performs throughout Seattle and western Washington, Portland, Oregon and California at festivals, concerts, cultural centers & events and schools. EUROPE Fatala An internationally known dance group from Guinea that toured throughout Europe, United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia. Naby performed as the lead balafon musician. It was based in Amsterdam and did recordings for Peter Gabriel's Real World label. WEST AFRICA Les Merveilles de Guinee, Bala et ses Baladins, Les Ballets Africains de Guinee, and Mande Yagha. Naby performed as a balafon, djembe and doundoun master griot musician with these various Guinean groups for over 10 years. ________________________________________ TEACHING EXPERIENCE Summer 2004 Seattle Public Library 2004 Summer Reading Program. Teach workshops to library patrons and children about griot musician traditions and history, the balafon and djembe drum instruments, how to sing Sussu songs and play African instruments. 1999-2004 Northwest Folklife in the Schools. Teach workshops, classes, in-service programs & clinics. Perform for yearly Folklive festival, concerts and performances. 1982-2004 Teach a variety of workshops and classes on how to play the balafon and djembe instruments, perform original compositions by Naby Camara, compose songs, sing traditional songs, and learn about the history and culture of Mande griot musicians. 1997-2000 Mandeng Djeli, Arcata, CA Teacher of drumming class. ________________________________________ INSTRUMENTS & MUSICIAL TRAINING Balafon 35 yrs Djembe 30 yrs DounDoun 30 yrs Naby began training on the Balafon at the age of 3 years with the legendary master player, Amadu Diabate. He continued to gain extensive experience performing for traditional ceremonies, weddings, namings and celebrations. Professional performing and teaching with the Guinea Ballet for 7 years also adds to Naby's extensive teaching experience. An internationally known dance group from Guinea that toured throughout Europe, United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia. Naby performed as the lead balafon musician. It was based in Amsterdam and did recordings for Peter Gabriel's Real World label.
